Essential Equipment for Test

• Casagrande : A mechanical device with a brass cup and a hard rubber base, used to drop the cup at a fixed height ($1\text{ cm}$) to determine.

• Grooving Tool: Used to cut a standard groove through the soil sample in the brass cup.

  • ASTM / Flat Grooving Tool: Standard tool used for fine-grained soils.

  • BS / Curved Grooving Tool: Used according to British standards.

• Porcelain Evaporating Dish / Mixing Dish: A porcelain bowl used for mixing the soil sample thoroughly with distilled water.

• Spatula: A flexible steel spatula used for mixing, placing, and leveling the soil sample in the cup.

• Drying Oven: A thermostatically controlled oven to dry soil samples for moisture content determination.

• Moisture Containers / Cans: Small airtight aluminum or glass containers used to hold soil samples for weighing before and after oven drying.

• Precision Balance / Weighing Scale: An electronic scale sensitive to  for accurately measuring soil sample mass.

• Sieve No. 40 : Standard sieve used to prepare the soil sample by removing particles larger.

• Distilled Water Bottle: Used to add clean, impurity-free water gradually while preparing the soil paste.

• Wash Bottle & Desiccator: A desiccator with silica gel to cool the dried soil containers without absorbing room moisture.

Key Theoretical Concepts & Formulas

• Definition: The minimum moisture content at which soil transitions from a plastic state to a liquid state and begins to flow under a small force.

• Atterberg Limits: A basic measure of the critical water contents of a fine-grained soil:

  • Plastic Limit: Boundary between semi-solid and plastic states.

  • Shrinkage Limit : Boundary below which further moisture loss causes no volume reduction.

• Plasticity Index: The range of moisture content over which the soil remains in a plastic state.

• Flow Index: The slope of the flow curve obtained by plotting moisture content against the logarithm of the number of blows.
