How an Industrial Dial Thermometer Works

Most industrial dial thermometers operate on Bimetallic Strip Technology. Here is the step-by-step process:

1. The Sensor: Inside the metal stem (the long rod), there is a coil made of two different metals (like steel and copper) bonded together.

2. Thermal Expansion: Every metal expands at a different rate when heated. When the stem is exposed to heat, one metal in the coil expands faster than the other.

3. The Twist: Because the two metals are bonded, this unequal expansion forces the coil to “twist” or wind tighter.

4. The Movement: This coil is connected to a pointer (the needle) on the dial face. As the coil twists, it physically moves the needle to the corresponding temperature mark on the scale.

5. The Result: You get a real-time, mechanical temperature reading without any electrical components.
