The Vicat Apparatus is a penetration device used to measure the physical properties of hydraulic cement and gypsum. It is the industry standard for determining how much water cement needs and how quickly it turns from a liquid paste into a solid rock.

Key Components:

• Frame: A sturdy metal stand that holds the moving parts.

• Sliding Rod: A vertical rod weighing 300g that carries the needles.

• Attachments: * Plunger (10mm diameter): Used for Consistency.

  • Initial Needle (1.13mm diameter): Used for Initial Setting Time.

  • Final Needle (with a 5mm circular collar): Used for Final Setting Time.

  • Vicat Mold: A split-type conical mold that holds the cement paste.
    

    How Does it Work?

    The operation of the is based on resistance. As cement reacts with water (hydration), it gets stiffer. The apparatus measures this stiffness by seeing how deep a weighted needle can sink into the paste.

    1. Determining Standard Consistency

    Before testing time, you must find out how much water the cement needs.

    You mix cement with water and place it in the mold.

  • The 10mm plunger is lowered to the surface and released.

  • The Goal: You are looking for the water percentage where the plunger stops 5mm to 7mm from the bottom of the mold. This is known as the “P” value (Standard Consistency).

    2. Initial Setting Time

    This tells engineers how long they have to mix and pour the concrete before it starts to harden.

    • The plunger is replaced with the 1.13mm needle.

    • The needle is dropped into the paste every few minutes.

    • The Result: When the needle can no longer penetrate deeper than 5mm from the bottom, the time elapsed since adding water is the Initial Setting Time.

      3. Final Setting Time

      This tells you when the concrete has completely lost its plasticity.

      • The needle with the annular (circular) attachment is used.

      • The Result: When the center needle makes a small mark on the surface, but the circular ring fails to make a mark, the cement has reached its Final Setting Time.
